Mexico, July 24 (Notimex).- In the last 24 hours the monitoring system of the Popocatepetl volcano recorded 50 moderate exhalations accompanied by emissions of steam, gas and small amounts of ash, the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred) said.

On it latest report, the agency said the most notable exhalation occurred on Wednesday at 07:27 hours (local time) and spewed out a 200-meters ash plume that headed west.

The agency also recorded a volcano-tectonic quake of Mc>2.3 at 00:47 hours. Despite this activity, the Volcanic Alert Semaphore remains at Yellow Phase 2.

Cenapred recalled that on July 15 a reconnaissance flight was performed over the crater. This determined that the lava dome, seen on July 10, was destroyed by explosions and instead left a crater of 200 meters in diameter and 20-30 meters deep.

Cenapred issued recommendations such as keeping a safety radius of 12 kilometers from the crater and controlling traffic between Santiago Xalitzintla (Puebla) and San Pedro Nexapa (State of Mexico) via Paso de Cortés.

The agency asked to Civil Protection authorities to maintain preventive procedures, and to the population, to be aware of the official information.

Popocatépetl Volcano is monitored continuously 24 hours a day and any changes will be informed in a timely manner.
